“…let it snow, let it what?”

Some things when combined form the perfect concoction of cohesion and accomplishment. This is when peanut butter meets jelly. When a flux capacitor hits 88 miles per hour. Where Yoko Meets Ono, Sonny meets Cher, pumpkin patches meet hay rides and when hip first danced with hop. We, at the Fair, are notorious at uniting two entities to form one, dare I say, more perfect union.  See corn dogs and mustard, real dogs and Frisbees, padlocks and water torture cells, donuts and cheeseburgers.

Next to add to the list – the Kentucky State Fair and Christmas. “Really?” may be your first thought. This is not a combination to be taken lightly. The most anticipated summertime event in the Commonwealth and one of the most cherished holiday seasons in the entire world. Yes, that’s it. The 11-day event associated with heat, food and celebration and the long winter season associated with snow, food and celebration. Yes, that too.

The Fair gets into the holiday celebration a little early with the Actors Theatre of Louisville’s “Search for Ralphie” competition on the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Blue Ribbon Stage. They won’t be boasting an “official Red Ryder, carbine action, two hundred-shot range model air rifle” and the round-Coke bottle glasses are simply optional, but 10 young boys will get the opportunity to perform for the lead role in the stage adaptation of the 1983 holiday movie classic, A Christmas Story.

Internationally acclaimed Actors Theatre of Louisville will conclude a special casting call Saturday, Aug. 28 at the Kentucky State Fair in their search for Ralphie. At 2 p.m. on the Toyota Manufacturing Blue Ribbon Stage in the South Wing B Lobby, audience members, along with a celebrity panel of judges, will select the winner to star in the seasonal stage performance. Fairgoers will be able to watch all 10 actors audition for the third and final time before voting for their favorite “Ralphie.”

Along with “The Search for Ralphie” auditions, Actors Theatre has joined in the fun of entering the Lynn’s Paradise Cafe Ugly Lamp Contest. As an ode to the Christmas classic, the Ugly Leg Lamp contest will add seasonal humor to the popular aesthetically-pleasing illumination contest. Though FOX41 and Home Depot was already crowned champion of the Ugly Leg Lamp Contest on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 3 p.m. on the Blue Ribbon Stage, all Ugly Lamps are be displayed in the South Wing B during the entire Fair.
